SPRINGFIELD — In solidarity with hundreds of similar rallies across the country, the Sangamon County chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America will gather Dec. 7 at the Spring eld Verizon store to protest the Federal Communication Commission’s plan to kill net neutrality.
What is net neutrality?
Net neutrality is a fundamental tenet of online democracy. It simply means that internet service providers should allow everyone equal access to all online content regardless of the source. Without it, ISPs could block access to certain content and applications and charge users extra to access them, or ISPs could slow down their network to give preference to users who pay more.
Verizon is one of the many providers leading the charge to end net neutrality. And perhaps not coincidentally, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai is a former top lawyer for Verizon and a shining example of the Trump administration’s blatant gri ing of the American people.
What’s the plan?
Sangamon DSA, along with Action Illinois, Spring eld Call 2 Action and other supporters of an open Internet, will gather at 5 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Verizon store, 3424 Freedom Drive in Spring eld, to bring attention to an issue that will further economic injustice if allowed to pass.
